Disposing of or moving furniture is not an easy task by any means. Apart from the logistics of it, you will also have to factor in the preservation of the surroundings while removing the furniture from a particular place.
That’s why you’ve got to call in the experts sometimes. Moreover, if there’s junk removal involved, take the help of specialized services for the same. After all, it is always much better to delegate these tasks to the experts.
Hold on, though!
We’ve got some top tips to make moving or disposing of furniture a breeze. Check them out before you start switching furniture around the house!
- Get the breakables out of the way!
If it’s a job that requires moving a sofa or a bed, we recommend that you get all the precious breakables out of the way. We mean the Ming vases or the Dresden china that you may have placed on display.
If you don’t want to lose tears over the precious heirlooms that may break during a move, it’s a good idea to keep them safe in another room until you’re done arranging the present ones. Better be safe than sorry, right?
- Ask for help, if you need it
If you find yourself unequal to the task of carrying that ottoman to the bedroom and up some tricky stairs, do yourself a favor and call over some friends or ask a neighbor to help. Rather than injuring yourself or straining any muscles, you can ask for stronger hands to get the task completed successfully.
Don’t hesitate to follow this advice during junk removal either.
- Invest in some tools

There are some moving tools that every household should keep on standby. These include forearm straps, sliders, and furniture pads. Forearm straps help to lift washing machines, cupboards, drawers so that two people can easily carry them from one place to another.
Use sliders to put under your furniture, making it easier for a simple shift. Furniture pads also offer the same service. These will alleviate the strain you apply to your forearms and protect the body from unnecessary strain.
- Make and stick to a blueprint
Before you start disposing of or moving, have an idea of what you want the room to look like. Of course, sometimes you’ll need to change the blueprint, keep alternatives ready to help you quickly decide if the bed should be near or across the window.
Leave indecisiveness out the door and ensure beforehand how you’d like your spaces to be arranged. Having a plan also allows you to come up with an order in which you can move the furniture, making for a safer experience all over.
- Cover corners
When you move heavy furniture with sharp edges like a bed or a sofa, wrap the corners with towels or furniture-safe tape. Sharp edges can scratch the paint on walls and leave you with unnecessary repair work.
To avoid spoiling the wall while you move, take extra caution to cushion the sharp edges of your furniture. Apart from the paint, softening sharp edges also protects kids from getting scratched or hurt.
- Tape or remove drawers
This is the oldest furniture moving trick in the book. Unless you want to remove and replace drawer after drawer, tape them shut.
Doing this will prevent drawers from bursting open when you’re moving and protect not-so nimble toes from getting squashed under the heavy weight. Even the wardrobe doors need to be taped shut to prevent them from nicking paint or hurting anybody.
- Lift with your legs, not back
Another oft-repeated advice, lift with your legs, not your back. To do this, practice your squat pose.
Don’t bend your back, but bend your knees. This keeps the weight distributed to your body’s lower half, so there is less likelihood of pulling your back muscles or causing any strain.
- Cover walls with sheets or paper to prevent scratches
If you’ve got bespoke walls painted with creative designs or if you’ve got a wallpaper of a rare kind, it wouldn’t hurt to cover them with sheets or paper as the case may be.
Try this especially nifty trick when you are manoeuvring around narrow corners or tricky hallways.
- Sliding on wood
If you’re sliding furniture on wood, don’t forget to put in a couple of furniture pads under the legs so that they don’t scratch the surface of delicate flooring like wood.
- Lighten the load
Always, always, when moving furniture, lighten the load. All you need to do is remove half of a wardrobe’s content or even a drawer before you begin to shift it.
